About ICC
General Guidelines for host families

  1. Convenient location (to UW, BCC, etc.)
Ideal commuting time is no more than one hour from your house to the school by bus with reasonable walking distance from bus stops.
  2. Comfortable accommodation
The room must be furnished and have a room temperature that is comfortable for students. Please note that when students first come to this area, they often feel the cold intensely.
  3. Different schedules
Please be aware that students may come home late, or have to stay up late due to their schoolwork. Their later arrival may cause a little bit of noise (going to the bathroom, making tea, etc.) and it may disrupt you. Please try to be understanding of their needs. At the same time, if the disruption is having a significant impact on your household, communicate with your student about it.
  4. Meals
The homestay should include the studentsf meals. While the students may prepare their own breakfast and/or lunch, the host is asked to include the student in the household meals at least five times a week. As the students sometimes have evening classes, they are at times unable to join in the evening meal. We encourage the student and host to communicate about meal times and hope that meals will be able to be eaten together as often as possible.
  5. Free phone access for local calls
Please provide free phone access for local calls. Students should not be charged for basic phone service.
  6. Internet access
Please allow students to access the Internet (either dial-up, cable, or DSL) for a reasonable amount of time per day (1-2 hours if possible). Basic monthly internet bills should not to be charged to students.
  7. Shower time
Please allow students to take a shower at least until 10:00 pm, since some students take night classes. It is also critical to allow students to have at least 10 minutes in the shower, and understand that some students may want to take a bath every once in a while.
  8. Laundry
Please allow students to do their laundry at least once a week. If some families prefer to include the studentfs laundry with their own, this is totally fine.
  9. Basic household supplies
Please provide daily household supplies (such as laundry detergent, toilet paper, hand soap, and dishwashing soap) for your students.
  10. Good relationship
While students provide a monthly gratuity stipend as a means of helping you cover your costs related to the homestay, we hope that the relationship between the host and student focus on friendship and cultural exchange, not your financial needs. Focusing on the financial arrangements of the homestay can sometimes cause the student to misunderstand your motivation for welcoming them into your home. We truly appreciate the kindness you extend to our students on a daily basis and hope to make the homestay experience enjoyable for both the host and the student.
